Taking a Course

Academy

This guide follows one Academy course from start to finish: the start screen, moving through lessons, the activities along the way, and the evaluation at the end. It also covers the reader settings that change how lessons look.

The Start Screen

Many courses open on a start screen headed Before you begin. It can include:

  • A Description of the course.
  • For CME courses, the Number of Credits, Release date, and Expiration date.
  • Disclosures, Disclaimer, Accreditation, and Support sections. Click a heading to open or close it.

When you are ready, click Start Course in the Table of Contents box on the right.

Moving Through Lessons

  • Use Previous and Next at the bottom of the Table of Contents box, or click any lesson in the Table of Contents.
  • The box shows your Course Status and how many lessons you have finished. A finished lesson gets a check mark. A lesson counts as finished when you scroll to its end or click Next.
  • You can leave at any time. Opening the course again takes you back to the last place you were reading. The Start Screen row in the Table of Contents takes you back to the start screen.
  • All Courses at the top of the page takes you back to Academy Home.

Polls, Quizzes, and Course Tests

  • Polls ask for your view. After you Submit, you usually see How others responded. Change answer lets you vote again.
  • Mini quizzes check your understanding as you read. You find out straight away whether you were right. Nothing is recorded, so try as many times as you like.
  • Course tests list their questions on one page. Answer every question, then click Submit answers. A test can only be submitted once and isn't scored.

The Evaluation

Most courses end with an Evaluation. It shows one screen at a time, with Previous and Next to move between screens. Answer the required questions, then click Submit answers on the last screen. You can only submit once.

On a CME course, the button that takes you to the evaluation reads Claim CME, because submitting the evaluation is how you claim the credit. See Claiming CME credit.

A course is Completed when you submit its evaluation, or when you have finished every lesson.

Reader Settings

Click Accessibility under the Table of Contents box to open Reader Settings:

  • Font Size — a slider with five sizes.
  • Line Spacing — Compact, Normal, or Relaxed.
  • Font — Sans or Serif.
  • Focus mode and Reading ruler — switches that make it easier to keep your place.

Your settings are saved to your account and apply to every course you open.
